A Colorado marijuana dispensary is eliminating the middle man by rolling out the first pot vending machine in the Centennial State.

Stocked with pot and marijuana-infused snacks such as gummies, caramels, bars, sticky ickies, brownies and cookies, Eagle Vail, Colo. dispensary Herbal Elements displayed the ZaZZZ machine Saturday at Montana’s Smokehouse barbecue restaurant in Avon, according to NPR.

The climate-controlled machine – to keep products fresh — was scheduled to be installed over the weekend inside Herbal Elements’ dispensary.

Using active biometrics, the ZaZZZ confirms a consumer’s identity and age after they swipe a driver’s license, said Steven Shearin, COO of Tranzbyte, parent company of ZaZZZ manufacturer American Green. Cameras attached to the machine ensure the person swiping the license is the same person on the card.

Recreational marijuana became legal in Colorado on Jan. 1 to anyone age 21 and over.
In addition to the "wow factor," Shearin says the ZaZZZ has other benefits, such as cutting down on customer and employee theft, eliminating counter lines, as well as anxiety "of a somewhat shy customer capable of self-service."

While Arizona and California have machines, those states keep them behind store counters, NPR reports.

Shearin said he never imagined he’d "live to see the end of prohibition against a plant of such great promise."

There could come a day, he said, when the law will allow the machines to be placed in public venues, not just dispensaries.

"People buy alcoholic drinks at festivals and games," he said.
