Megyn Kelly's exit from Fox News could change the cable news landscape, reports The Washington Post.

Kelly, who joined Fox News in 2004, on Monday announced that she was leaving the news organization to work at NBC News, a move first reported by The New York Times.

The change wasn't surprising by any means. Her show, "The Kelly File," was a big hit as the second-rated show in cable news behind "The O'Reilly Factor." Now Fox must fill that big gap at a time when other conservative media outlets like "Conservative Review TV" and "The Right Side Broadcasting Network" are making moves.

It also happens ahead of Republican Donald Trump's inauguration and, months after the ouster of former Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes and abrupt exit of longtime Fox News host Greta Van Susteren.

But longtime anchor Shepard Smith in October told the Huffington Post that Rupert Murdoch wanted to hire more journalists and build "a massive new newsroom."
