The son of retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn — President-elect Donald Trump's choice for national security adviser — on Sunday posted a tweet to spread a conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton and her campaign chief were operating a child sex ring in a back room of a Washington D.C. pizza restaurant.

Michael Flynn Jr. tweeted about the false story after an armed man entered Comet Ping Pong in Washington D.C.

Politico reported that the suspect told police he came to the establishment to self-investigate "Pizza Gate," the name of the fringe theory.

One or more shots were reportedly fired in the incident after the gunman stormed the establishment with an assault rifle and headed for the back room, although there were no injuries, the New York Daily News reported.

Even after CNN's Jake Tapper sent him personal messages asking why he is pushing this clearly false theory, especially following the incident which could have ended in bloodshed, Flynn continued to be defiant, posting a response to Tapper's view in this tweet.

The Washington Post pointed out that Flynn's accusations on this bogus theory take on more significance since he served as his father's chief of staff.
