First lady Michelle Obama is replacing shamed and suspended "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams in a taped introduction of the Lincoln Awards on PBS on Friday night.
Cappy McGarr, co-founder of the awards,
told the New York Daily News the news anchor voluntarily bowed out because he didn't want to be a distraction.
Award honorees include Bruce Springsteen, Nick Jonas, Gavin DeGraw, and Jerry Lewis.
The Washington event recognizes people who aid military veterans and their families.
Williams initially filmed his spots for the show in January before a live audience.
He was suspended Feb. 10 for six months without pay after allegations he embellished stories about his military reporting overseas.
NBC has not announced what will happen when Williams' suspension ends in August.
