A majority of Michigan residents oppose a proposed state ban on abortion coverage for basic health insurance plans, a new poll reveals.

The poll, commissioned by the bipartisan public relations firm Lambert, Edwards & Associates, found 50 percent of 600 likely voters in the Great Lakes State oppose the ban, which would force women to buy additional coverage for abortion.

Another 42 percent support it, while eight percent are undecided, the Detroit News reports.

If enacted, the ban would stop taxpayer-subsidized private health insurance plans from covering abortion procedures.

Michigan GOP Gov. Rick Snyder last year vetoed a bill that included the ban proposal.
The same poll also found 51 percent of those surveyed oppose putting the question of legalizing same-sex marriage on a state ballot, while 42 percent support it.
