Mike Tyson is getting back in the boxing ring this fall, Yahoo Sports reports.
The former undisputed world heavyweight champion will put his gloves back on for what will his first professional fight in more than 15 years.
His opponent is Roy Jones Jr. The two are scheduled to compete in an eight-round exhibition scheduled for Sept. 12 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.
Executive director of the California State Athletic Commission Andy Foster told Yahoo Sports that Tyson blocked off the date. He said he recently met with Tyson and Jones on a Zoom conference call to discuss the exhibition fight.
TMZ Sports reports that the fight will be available on pay-per-view and the social media platform Triller. According to TMZ Sports, Triller has also been granted the rights for a 10-part docuseries following Tyson and Jones as they prepare to battle it out.
Rumors of a Tyson comeback have been swirling around for months. The boxer posted several videos on social media showing off his speed and skills. In May, his trainer said he could be ready for a fight in six months.
His first fight back was supposed to be against Tyson Fury, according to Fox News. But that deal fell through last month when Fury said he was offered “peanuts” compared to what Tyson was being paid.
“[Mike Tyson’s] people contacted me, me and Mike had a phone call, it was all real but never materialized,” Fury said. “Someone who was offering the money to Mike came back and offered us peanuts completely. Mike was talking about $500 million figures, but what came back on paper was a joke, it was crazy.”
The last time Jones, 51, stepped in the ring was in February 2018. He retired with a career record of 66-9. Tyson hasn’t boxed professionally since June 2005. His record is 50-6.
Foster said the men will likely be wearing larger gloves but no protective headgear.
“This isn’t a situation where they’re going out there to try to take each other’s heads off,” Foster told Yahoo Sports. “They’re just going to be in there moving around the ring and letting fans see these legends.”
