Drugs that make people hallucinate shows could be the future of television, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said this week.

According to The Independent, Hastings made the claim at the Wall Street Journal's "WSJD Live" event on Monday.

"In 20 or 50 years, taking a personalized blue pill you just hallucinate in an entertaining way and then a white pill brings you back to normality is perfectly viable," said Hastings, who co-founded Netflix in 1997. "And if the source of human entertainment in 30 or 40 years is pharmacological, we'll be in real trouble."

"Movies & TV shows will be like the opera and the novel," Time cited Hastings as saying. "There will be substitutes."

The future of TV has been discussed in great detail in recent years amid the practice of "cord cutting," which refers to people canceling their cable or satellite TV subscriptions and relying on the internet to watch TV. Netflix provides a vast library of movies and TV shows.
