Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced that preliminary results of coronavirus antibody testing show that an estimated 13.9% of New York residents have had the virus, CNBC reports.
"What we found so far is that the statewide number is 13.9% tested positive for having the antibodies," Cuomo said. "They were infected three weeks ago, four weeks ago, five weeks ago, six weeks ago, but they had the virus, they developed the antibodies, and they are now recovered."
The governor said that 3,000 people were randomly tested at grocery stores and other shopping locations in 40 localities spread over 19 counties for antibodies produced to combat the coronavirus, which would indicate that they had the virus at some point and have since recovered.
The largest percentage of positive tests are in New York City, with 21.2% positive for antibodies, followed by Long Island at 16.7% and Westchester County at 11.7%. The percentage of positive results elsewhere in the state is 3.6%.
Cuomo said the people who were given the antibody tests "are people who were out and about shopping," which may have skewed the results. "They were not people who were in their home, they were not people isolated, they were not people who were quarantined who you could argue probably had a lower rate of infection because they wouldn't come out of the house."
