Hospital visits will resume in some New York hospitals under a new pilot program announced Tuesday, The New York Times reports.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said 16 hospitals will begin to allow patients to have visitors. Nine of the hospitals selected to participate in the pilot program are located in NYC.
Visitors have been banned from hospitals statewide since March 18 to help curb the spread of coronavirus. With the number of infections on the decline, Cuomo said he will allow hospital visitation to begin again.
“It is terrible to have someone in the hospital and then that person is isolated, not being able to see their family or friends,” Cuomo said during his daily briefing.
Thousands of people hospitalized were unable to have family or friends visit them. Many people who died due to coronavirus or other complications had to say goodbye over the phone or not at all.
Hospital visitors will have to wear masks and other personal protective equipment. They also will have to under go temperature screenings, the governor said.
Some of the hospitals participating in the pilot program that will allow visitors include Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and Mount Sinai hospitals in Queens and Manhattan.
