Newt: Every School Should Have an 'Armed Defender'

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said schools should arm teachers in order to protect students.

"You're not going to stop all of them, which is why I think we have to have some kind of armed defenders who are also school teachers or administrators in every school in the country," Gingrich said Tuesday on Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

Gingrich said his idea for a long-term solution is "to have, depending on the size of the school, six to eight teachers or administrators who are trained in the use of firearms and have concealed-carry permits and are prepared to defend the kids."

"Sen. [John] Cornyn does have a bill which expands the gun check, and I think most Americans would agree with that. I mean, if you have somebody who is just blatantly, obviously nuts, they shouldn't be able to get a gun," Gingrich said. "That should not be a hard problem."
