Immigrants coming across the Mexican border illegally will not be eligible for legalization or deferred deportation status, no matter what their age, President Barack Obama told Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto during a conference call Thursday.
According to the White House, Obama President Obama told his Nieto that he welcomes his "efforts to target the criminals that lure families to send children" across the border into the United States,
CNN reported. However, it's likely most of the people making the illegal journey to the United States will be sent back to their home countries, Obama said.
According to authorities, between 60,000 to 80,000 children from Central America will cross the border this year without their parents.
Obama's call to Nieto came a day before Vice President Joe Biden heads to Guatemala Friday to meet with regional leaders. In addition, the call came before Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson's trip will travel to one of the youth shelters, at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, on Friday.
Biden is expected to face pressure from Central American leaders about improving migrant rights in the United States,
