Poll: Many Democrats Oppose Obama's Immigration Policies

A surprising number of Democrats and swing voters have strong views opposing President Barack Obama’s immigration policies, a recently released poll shows.

The George Washington University’s Battleground survey, which was conducted in August but only released this week, revealed that there is decidedly “strong” opposition and “somewhat” opposition to the Obama administration immigration rulings, according to The Daily Caller.

Out of the 1,015 likely voters surveyed, a combination of 57 percent, while 38 percent favored Obama’s policies, which may eventually result in amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

The poll was broken down into demographic groups, which could help GOP campaigns specifically target some of them to change their vote, especially those who “strongly” opposed Obama’s immigration measures, the Caller reported.

When it came to the 114 “conservative Democrats” in the poll, 28 percent were strongly against it while 23 percent strongly supported Obama’s policies.

Of the 163 moderate conservative Democrats, 25 percent gave them a thumbs-down while 21 percent gave them the thumbs-up. As for “soft Dems,” as the survey called them, 20 percent were strongly against, while 34 were strongly in favor.

The data showed that 204 low-income voters in the poll voted 46 percent strongly against, while 24 percent strongly supported Obama on immigration, despite the fact that just over half of the respondents approved of Obama’s job performance.

The Battleground poll also showed that swing voters who lean Democratic were unhappy with Obama’s policies. Forty-four of independents strongly disapproved while 17 percent strongly approved.

Republicans have criticized the president for immigration policies that do not enforce the law, while also reducing the amount of deportations of illegal immigrants living in the U.S., especially those who came as children.

The GOP has blamed Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program for serving as an inducement for more illegal immigration, leading to the summer surge of kids from Central American countries who crossed the border from Mexico illegally.

Obama has made it clear that he plans to use executive action after the midterm elections to reform the U.S. immigration system, possibly granting immediate amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.

House Speaker John Boehner has attacked Obama’s unilateral immigration plans, saying they “can't and won't fix these problems.”
