Seventy-three abortion clinics closed down in 2014, making it the second highest number of closures in one year, according to a pro-life group.
The 73 abortion facilities were shut down for at least part of the year and that number includes clinics that offer medication-only abortions as well as surgical abortions,
Operation Rescue is reporting.
Sixty of the 73 facilities were surgical abortion clinics, and 47 percent of those closures were permanent closures. The other 13 closed down temporarily due to safety concerns, but were later reopened via court order.
The number of abortion clinics that shuttered in 2014 is 20 short of the 93 that shut down in 2013. However, by comparison, only 24 facilities closed down in 2012.
There are currently 739 abortion facilities that remain open across the country. The number of surgical clinics that are still in business is 551, which has dropped 162 from 713 in 2009.
"We are continuing to witness the implosion of the abortion cartel in America,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue.
“The only things that are preventing total collapse are court injunctions that are blocking several state abortion safety laws from being enforced," he explained.
"Once those laws clear the courts, we expect to see even more dangerous abortion facilities close. This is great news for women and babies because when abortion clinics close, lives are saved,” Newman added.
Operation Rescue claims to be the sole pro-life organization that keeps an accurate record of the number of facilities in operation across the country.
