GOP vice presidential candidate Mike Pence paid a solemn visit to the Pentagon 9/11 memorial on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks, leaving a bouquet of white roses to honor the highest ranking military official who died that day.
The Indiana governor and his wife, Karen, left the tribute at the portion of the memorial dedicated to fellow Indiana native Army Lt. Gen. Timothy Maude, Roll Call reports.
Pence, who was a member of the House at the time of the attacks, also visited the plaza honoring 184 airline passengers and Defense Department workers who died when one of the jetliners hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists slammed into the Pentagon's west facade.
"It hardly seems like 15 years ago," Pence said prior to his visit during a speech Saturday at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, Roll Call reports.
"I'll never forget the sights and sounds of that day. I'll never forget seeing half of the sky filled with billowing smoke. I will promise you this: The day that Donald Trump becomes president of the United States of America, we will again rebuild our military. We will restore the arsenal of democracy, and America will again stand tall on the world stage."
