Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said Sunday that government isn't the ideal distributor for a coronavirus vaccine, and that it should be a collaboration with the private sector drug company.

In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Bourla said Pfizer, one of several companies working on a COVID-19 vaccine, is preparing for distribution of its candidate already.

“The how [to distribute] I think is going to be very difficult for the government to do it, likely they will collaborate with us,” he said.

“Shipping medicine, it is complex, and particularly when you want special storage conditions, but we know how to do it very well. I think it's going to be a collaboration between the government of its country and us.”

“We know how to do it very well,” he declared.

According to Bourla, Pfizer is “preparing” for a situation in which its vaccine proves effective by the end of October and if the FDA approves it as safe, be available for distribution by year’s end.

“In our base case, we will know if the product works or not by the end of October,” he said, adding: “We are preparing for it… We are already manufacturing hundreds and thousands of doses… just in case we have a good study done… we will be ready.”
