Colorado Democratic Rep. Jared Polis, one of four openly gay members of Congress, is lamenting the lack of any gay bar in his district.
In a pre-convention speech to California delegates in Charlotte Monday, he said Colorado is “not a gay mecca,”
The Hill reports. Polis represents a solidly Democratic district that includes Boulder.
"There's not a single gay bar in my entire district," he said. "California does a better job of accommodating the gay community, particularly San Francisco, Polis said.
But he pointed out that there are no openly gay Californians in Congress now.
Polis wants to change that statistic. He’s co-chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s effort to win specific districts now held by Republicans so Democrats can snag the 25 seats they need to regain control of the House.
Polis told the delegates that in California’s 41st District, he’s enthusiastic about Mark Takano, an openly gay teacher in a hotly-contested race against GOP Riverside County supervisor John Tavaglione.
When Polis asked the delegates, "Are there any gay people in California?" he received loud cheers. The Colorado congressman is the first openly gay parent in the history of Congress.
