More than two-thirds of Americans support major restrictions on abortion such as a ban after the first trimester, according to the latest Marist poll commissioned by The Knights of Columbus.
According to the poll, 76-percent back significant restrictions, including making abortions available only during the first three months of pregnancy, or in the case of rape, incest, or the mother's life being endangered.
Other results from the survey:
- 92 percent of Republicans want "significant restrictions."
- 78 percent of Independents.
- 61 percent of Democrats.
- 60 percent of voters who identify as pro-choice.
- 63 percent of Americans support a ban on abortions after 20 weeks.
- 56 percent believe abortion is morally wrong, while 41 percent consider it morally acceptable.
- 64 percent believe it's morally wrong in the case of unborn children with genetic issues such as Down syndrome, while 26 percent consider that morally acceptable.
"This survey shows clearly that the 'pro-choice' label can no longer be assumed to mean support for abortion on demand. Nor can abortion be thought of as a partisan issue since majorities of Democrats, independents, and Republicans all agree that it should be substantially restricted," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson.
"It is high time that our political debates reflected this national consensus and used it as a starting point," Anderson added.
The results were from Marist surveys conducted Dec. 4-7, 2017 among 1,267 adults and a second survey of 1,350 adults conducted Jan. 8-10, 2018, with results statistically significant with 2.8 percentage points and 2.7 percentage points, respectively.
