Female voters are more likely to vote for Democrats than Republicans, according to a poll released Tuesday from the Public Religion Research Institute.

The results:

  • 51 percent of women said that they would vote for a Democratic candidate if the 2018 midterm elections were held today, compared to 31 percent who say they would vote Republican.
  • 44 percent of all voters would support a Democrat, while 37 percent would vote Republican.
  • 43 percent of men would support a Republican, compared to 36 percent who would support a Democrat.

Republicans are not unified in their support for President Donald Trump. About one in three Republicans — 31 percent — said they would prefer that the Republican nominee for president in 2020 be someone other than Trump.

The poll's results were based on interviews conducted between Oct. 18 and Oct. 30 among a random sample of 2,019 adults age 18 or older living in the U.S, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points, according to the PRRI press release.
