Seventy percent of Americans say staying home to slow the spread of the coronavirus should be the top priority for the U.S., according to a new CBS News poll.
Thirty percent say the top priority should be getting back to work in order to reopen the economy.
Here are the highlights of the poll released Thursday.
- 63% are more worried about stay-at-home restrictions being lifted too fast and worsening the outbreak, compared to 37% who are concerned about restrictions being lifted too slowly and the economy getting worse.
- 48% say if stay-at-home orders were lifted now, they would not return to public places unless the outbreak ended. Less say they may return depending on the outbreak, 39%, while 13% say they would definitely return to public places regardless of the status of the outbreak.
- 41% say the restrictions will impact their finances in a few weeks, compared to 36% who say it has already impacted them. 17% say it will never impact them.
- 77% of Republicans say stay-at-home orders have been effective, compared to 85% of Democrats and 75% of independents.
- 54% say their governor should decide when to reopen the economy in their state. 27% say county/city officials should decide, and 19% say it should be up to President Donald Trump.
- 69% say state and local officials have done a good job handling the outbreak, compared to 48% who say Trump has.
The poll, conducted April 20-22, surveyed 2,112 people. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
