Assad Supporters Hack Washington Post Website

By    |   Thursday, 15 August 2013 01:00 PM EDT

One day after The New York Times website went dark, The Washington Post’s site was compromised on Thursday, the victim of computer hackers.

“The Washington Post website was hacked today, with readers on certain stories being redirected to the site of the Syrian Electronic Army,” The Post told its readers.

The Syrian Electronic Army, which also calls itself the Syrian Electronic Soldiers, is a group of hackers aligned with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Its top targets are well known media organizations and human-rights groups. It previously has attacked companies such as Reuters, the Financial Times, and Britain’s ITV News.

The group once caused the New York Stock Exchange to drop briefly when it issued a fake message from The Associated Press Twitter account that there had been an attack on the White House.

The Times website was inaccessible for nearly two hours late Wednesday morning and early afternoon because of technical issues.

A source told the Fox Business Network the shutdown appeared to be caused by a cyber attack. The Times said the exact cause of the disruption remains unclear.
