Just 36 percent of registered voters say they would back President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, compared with 43 percent who say they would support an unnamed Democratic opponent, according to a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released Tuesday.

The poll comes amid a blistering partial government shutdown that has negatively affected Trump and the Republican Party, with six polls blaming the White House and many objecting to the shutdown.

Trump's approval rating, though, held steady in the first weeks of 2019, according to the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll.

"Trump's re-election number remains low, but he is not yet facing a specific candidate," Mark Penn, co-director of Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, told The Hill.

"A lot of voters are shopping for an alternative despite widespread approval of his economic and anti-terrorism policies."

Several big-name Democrats have waded into the presidential race, including Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and rising Democratic party star Beto O'Rourke are also mulling over whether to run.
