CNN's Toobin Apologizes for Coverage of Hillary Emails

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin on Monday apologized for how much time he devoted to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's email scandal in the 2016 election, per Mediaite.

Toobin made his apology after addressing news from last week the Department of Justice will end its investigation into Clinton's emails having found no "systemic" attempt to circumvent the law.

"This is also a story about the news media, about how much time we spent on that, and that's something that I have felt a great deal of personal responsibility for," Toobin told CNN's "New Day" on Monday. "I talked about the emails here at CNN, I wrote about it in The New Yorker, and I think I paid too much attention to them and I regret that.

"I hope a lesson is learned," he continued. "I mean, this story turns out to be . . . a big nothing, and we spent months on it. Hillary Clinton very likely lost the election because of it, and I think I should have been talking about other issues not about the emails."

The Justice Department found, although classified information was "inappropriately introduced into an unclassified system in furtherance of expedience," those involved "were aware of security policies and did their best to implement them in their operations."

It concludes, "Instances of classified information being deliberately transmitted via unclassified email were the rare exception and resulted in adjudicated security violations. There was no persuasive evidence of systemic, deliberate mishandling of classified information."
