Anti-abortion groups are throwing their weight behind legislation that would defund Planned Parenthood for a year, leaning hard on the Republican-controlled Congress to pass it, saying, "the GOP is without excuse."

The Family Research Council and Susan B. Anthony List released a joint statement challenging Republicans to pass the legislation put forth by Sens. Lindsey Graham, Bill Cassidy, Dean Heller and Ron Johnson.

"The pro-life majority controls both chambers of Congress and the White House. The GOP is without excuse," Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement.

"Failure to keep their promise to voters will bring into question whether this Congress can truly be called the 'pro-life Congress.' Rhetoric must be translated into verifiable action," they wrote.

The senators' proposal also would not allow any funding to go toward a health plan that included abortion coverage, the Examiner reported.
