American Cyclist Quinn Simmons was suspended from his team on Thursday after he tweeted something deemed “divisive,” Breitbart reports.
Trek-Segafredo suspended the 19-year-old cyclist for a Twitter response he wrote to Dutch journalist Jose Been that indicated he was a President Donald Trump supporter.
Been tweeted, in a since deleted post, that she hoped “this horrible presidency ends” for her American friends, adding, “if you follow me and support Trump you can go.”
Simmons replied to Been writing “Bye” followed by a Black hand emoji.
Another Twitter user posted that Simmons was, “Apparently a Trumper.” Simmons replied, “That’s right,” with an American flag emoji.
Trek-Segafredo then issued a statement that Simmons would be suspended from the team until further notice.
“Regrettably, team rider Quinn Simmons made statements online that we feel are divisive, incendiary, and detrimental to the team, professional cycling, its fans, and the positive future we hope to help create for the sport,” the team wrote. “(He) will not be racing for Trek-Segafredo until further notice.”
According to Breitbart, Been said that she felt “horrible” about the suspension.
