Sen. Rand Paul: Motive for My Attacker Shouldn't Matter

(Fox News)

Sen. Rand Paul said speculation over why someone attacked him diminishes what should be the clear message — that an assault like is unacceptable for any reason, the Kentucky Republican told Fox News on Tuesday.

Paul was attacked earlier this month in his yard by his neighbor and suffered six broken ribs.

Although he has returned to work in Washington D.C. and is doing much better and starting to heal, he still has a long way to recovery. Three of the ribs were displaced, which is much more painful than merely broken ones.

Paul said that he was completely surprised by the attack, as he had not spoken with the neighbor in about a decade.

The senator described what happened, saying he "was working in my yard with my earmuffs on to protect my hearing from the mower and I had gotten off the mower facing downhill and the attacker came running full blast [from behind]. I never saw him."

Paul said that he did not really know what motivated his neighbor to attack him and insisted that, "to me the bottom line is it is not so important. If someone mugs you, is it really justified for any reason?"

He added that those who continue to concentrate on the attacker's motivation miss that point that no reason would give him the right to harm someone else.
