A bronze statue of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is scheduled to be unveiled in Brooklyn on March 15, CityPoint has announced.
The statue of Ginsburg, who died last month, will be displayed for the first time to coincide with what would have been her 88th birthday, as well as Women’s History Month.
The larger-than-life statue was created by Gillie and Marc Schattner, a husband-and-wife team of artists, with Ginsburg’s “participation and approval,” according to CityPoint.
They unveiled 10 statues of women in New York City last year to more than triple the representation of females in statues in the city to 10%, with Ginsburg’s being the 11th in the series.
The Schattners said in a statement that “the final statue, which she endorsed, reflects Ginsburg's wish to be depicted in a dignified manner.”
The artists said that “With the two steps on its large base representing the Supreme Court and the climb she made to get there, the work is designed to provide the public with an opportunity to stand at her side, and gain inspiration from her journey fighting for equal rights.”
Borough President Eric Adams intends to declare March 15 as Justice Ginsburg Day in Brooklyn, where she was born and raised.
“No one can dispute the towering achievements of #RuthBaderGinsburg and the value of adding this judicial giant's likeness to the landscape of our city,” he tweeted on Tuesday.
