Yankees legend Reggie Jackson, in an interview with NJ.com released on Thursday, said former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has himself to blame for not making the Baseball Hall of Fame nine years in a row.
Schilling, a three-time World Series winner who's no stranger to controversy, came under fire earlier this month after he tweeted support for the Capitol rioters after they stormed the building, an incident that left multiple people dead.
"I would say to Curt, ‘Look at what you did. You took yourself out of the Hall of Fame because of what you say and how to express yourself and how you think.’ Freedom of speech is great, but we can’t have a country with white supremacy, Nazis, Black Panthers, racist stuff and anti-Semitics. We can’t have people wearing swastikas because it’s a freedom of expression. Come on!" Jackson said in an interview released days after the Hall of Fame announced that there were no new players admitted this year, with Schilling missing out by just 16 votes.
"Freedom of speech got you freed out of the Hall of Fame. Freedom of speech got your ass out of Cooperstown, bro!" said Jackson, who was admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993.
"I don’t care if Schilling is conservative or not conservative," he added. "That doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that he’s stepping out on the balcony and yelling out something to defame Jews or Muslims or any other ethnicity or gender. Curt, get away from here with that."
