Republican leaders around the nation took to social media Saturday to express their condolences on the death of Holocaust survivor, author and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel at 87.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus:
Mitt Romney, 2012 presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, 2016 presidential candidate: Ohio Gov. John Kasich, 2016 presidential candidate:
South Carolina Rep. Tim Scott:
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice:
House Speaker Paul Ryan noted that Wiesel received the Congressional Gold Medal in 1984.
"We mourn Elie Wiesel’s passing with profound gratitude for his life," the Wisconsin Republican said in a statement. "Professor Wiesel gave the voiceless not only a voice, but a lasting influence on the world.
"He made it his life’s work to ensure the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten or repeated," Ryan said. "This will forever be his legacy."
In his tribute, Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton reflected on Wiesel's 1960 book "Night."
"The Yiddish version of Elie Wiesel's memoir 'Night' ends on a note of despair," the first-term senator said. "He fears that the force of forgetfulness, the human urge to turn away from horror, and the lies of deceivers would bury the memory of the Holocaust.
"He laments that his words would do nothing to 'shake the conscience of the world.'
"On this point, Elie Wiesel was wrong," Cotton said. "His poetic yet unvarnished words and dignified advocacy cast a harsh light on the atrocities of the Holocaust, spoke loudly for the dead, and ceaselessly defended the basic rights of the living.
"He reminded each of us of our responsibility to each other by showing us the terrible depths to which mankind can descend."
