Rick Santorum has morphed from senator to sci-fi storyteller with a new Hollywood movie described as a "coming-of-age-during-the-apocalypse story."
Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator and two-time GOP presidential candidate, is executive producer of "Vanished — Left Behind: Next Generation."
It's being marketed as a tense, teen-friendly thriller in which all Christians suddenly vanish, forcing a 15-year-old girl and two teen boys "to navigate a dangerous new world ruled by those who are left behind."
Inspired by "Left Behind," a bestselling series of Christian books by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, "Vanished" — which premiered in theaters last month — will be available for digital download on Nov. 1 and on DVD on Nov. 15.
It's Santorum's latest foray into movie-making as CEO of EchoLight Studios, which produces family-friendly pictures with faith-based stories. He's also currently serving on Donald Trump's Catholic Advisory Board.
The movie stars Amber Frank, Mason Dye, Tom Everett Scott, Jackson Hurst and Dylan Sprayberry, and is rated PG-13 for "thematic elements and some violence/peril."
"It's a fun movie with all the good elements — drama, action, humor, and maybe even some love brewing. And it's pretty inspiring," Hurst told Parade in a recent interview. "You see seemingly normal people pushed to their absolute limits, and fight through."
