A week after professional golfer Rory McIlroy hit the links with President Donald Trump, he is defending himself after facing a firestorm of criticism from the anti-Trump crowd.

McIlroy played with Trump, former baseball player Paul Paul O'Neill, and Garry Singer, the CEO of golf company Clear Sports, at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. last weekend.

After receiving criticism for his decision to play with the president, McIlroy posted a statement on Twitter Friday to add some clarity to the discussion.

Two weeks ago after professional golfer Ernie Els accepted an invitation to play with Trump, he received similar criticism. Els later told The New York Times, "He is the president at the moment. If it was Barack Obama, I would have played. If it was Hillary Clinton, I would have played."
