Giuliani: Next NYC Mayor Should 'Embrace Stop-and-Frisk'

The next mayor of New York City should "embrace stop-and-frisk" police policies, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Friday.

"I hope the new mayor ... will embrace stop-and-frisk as a strategy," the Republican said on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends."

Giuliani's comments followed a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling Thursday temporarily blocking an August order from U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin that would have limited the controversial policy.

"I'm really very eased about this, because I was very worried that this was going to lead to a big increase in crime," Giuliani said.

But Democratic mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio, considered the frontrunner in the race to replace outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg, said he was "extremely disappointed" in the decision blocking Scheindlin's ruling.

On Fox, Giuliani made comparisons between the rate of crime in New York City and Chicago, crediting "proactive policing" with the drop in New York's murder rate.

"Here is one thing just to consider: Chicago has 3½ times the murders of New York. We're virtually the same city. Why? Because we do proactive policing," Giuliani said.

"Our police officers try to prevent crime. Their police officers try to arrest people who commit crimes," he said."Chicago is trying to change and go in our direction."
