In a pointed tweet on Wednesday, President Donald Trump weighed in on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the firestorm over his remarks at a pro-choice rally outside the Supreme Court.
"This is a direct & dangerous threat to the U.S. Supreme Court by Schumer. If a Republican did this, he or she would be arrested, or impeached. Serious action MUST be taken NOW!" Trump tweeted in the early evening.
His slam came after Schumer, speaking at a rally with abortion rights advocates, seemed to take particular aim at Trump's two high court appointees, conservative Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch.
“I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price.
“You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions,” he added.
Schumer was referencing an abortion case now before the court, the first significant one since Trump took office. Many abortion advocates fear the case will afford the court an opportunity to curtail the rights established via the landmark case of Roe v. Wade.
The chief justice, John Roberts, also rebuked Schumer for the remarks, calling them "dangerous."
