NFL Star Held Over Rape Charges in Three States

Thursday, 13 March 2014 03:49 PM EDT

A judge rejected a request for ex-NFL safety Darren Sharper to be released from custody after new charges were filed in Arizona, adding to alleged sex crimes in Los Angeles and New Orleans.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Renee Korn ordered the 38-year-old to remain jailed without bail following an announcement of the new drug and sexual assault charges in Arizona.

Sharper, charged in California with drugging and raping two women and accused in New Orleans on two counts of aggravated rape, surrendered to police in Los Angeles last month, to be held in LA's Men's Central Jail.

Sharper's lawyers had asked the judge to let the former football star be released on house arrest and electronic monitoring, and to surrender in Arizona in connection with the charges on which Sharper was indicted this week.

But prosecutors requested he remain held without bail in Los Angeles, and the judge agreed.

The judge noted that the Arizona case — in which Sharper is charged with two counts of sexual assault and three counts of administering dangerous drugs last November, was "entirely different" from the New Orleans charges.

In New Orleans, police have issued an arrest warrant alleging that he raped two women last September, but have not filed charges.

Sharper, who won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints in 2010 but retired later that year after 14 NFL seasons, has pleaded not guilty to the LA charges, which stemmed from alleged rapes in October and January this year.

The LA judge scheduled a new bail hearing for March 24.
