Conservative House Republicans want to sue President Barack Obama for bypassing Congress to
shield nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. They also want to deny him the money to make it happen.
In a Tuesday
letter to House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the seven conservative lawmakers asked the House leadership to "act on three measures."
"First, the House should immediately pass a short-term spending bill that defunds the entirety of President Obama's executive order," they wrote.
The lawmakers also pressed for passage of a House resolution that would authorize the lower chamber to sue Obama for any actions in violation of the Constitution involving immigration enforcement.
"Finally, the House must prohibit any funds from being used to provide work permits or green cards to illegal immigrants who are unlawfully living in the United States," they wrote.
"There is too much at risk for this lawlessness to go unchallenged," they wrote.
One of the letter signers, Alabama Republican Rep. Mo Brooks, introduced the resolution to authorize a lawsuit last week,
The Hill reports.
The pressure comes in the wake of a pending House GOP lawsuit against Obama for his use of executive power to delay the
Obamacare requirement that some employers provide workers with health insurance.
The Hill points out that defunding the immigration executive order may not be possible through a government spending bill that has to be passed to avoid a government shutdown after Dec. 11.
The agency that issues work permits, Citizenship and Immigration Services, is funded through fees, The Hill reports.
House Republicans plan to hold a conference Dec. 2, and could decide on whether to take up the conservatives' cause at that time, The Hill notes.
