Forensic Psychologist Mohandie: LA Shooting Likely 'Suicide By Cop'

By    |   Friday, 01 November 2013 07:23 PM EDT

The armed maniac who killed a Transportation Security Administration worker and wounded three others at Los Angeles International Airport was likely trying to be killed in a phenomenon authorities call "suicide by cop," says Dr. Kris Mohandie, a leading police forensic psychologist.

Police say Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, was shot and critically wounded Friday morning after he opened fire with an assault rifle in an airport terminal.

Ciancia's brother told police he had received a text message from the alleged gunman shortly before saying he was thinking about taking his life.

"If that's true what he texted his brother, what we're looking at here is a suicide-by-cop situation," Mohandie told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"What suicide-by-cop is, is when a person engages in real or apparent danger to others in their bid to commit suicide.

"The folks at the airport are taking security very seriously and, unfortunately, it sounds like he may have manipulated those officers down there … into participating unwillingly in this situation. So it looks like a suicide-by-cop."
