Tom Brokaw Says His Cancer Is in Remission

Sunday, 21 December 2014 03:00 PM EST

Tom Brokaw shared some good news with his NBC colleagues on Sunday: His cancer is in remission.

"A year ago my future was more uncertain than I cared to acknowledge but now I face the New Year with very encouraging news," he wrote in a note addressed to his "NBC Family." "The cancer is in remission, and I will shortly go on a drug maintenance regimen to keep it there."

The 74-year-old was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that attacks blood cells in the bone marrow, last August. The note goes on to say how fortunate Brokaw considers himself to be, saying his challenges are "footnotes" compared to the ones of the men fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.

Brokaw, who anchored "NBC Nightly News" from 1982 to 2004, was a presidential delegate to the 70th anniversary of the battle, and remembered the obstacles the military men went through in the note.

The legendary anchor went public with his diagnosis in February, expressing at the time his desire to keep health matters private. He's since provided very few updates on his condition.

Brokaw has remained a special correspondent on NBC News and recently appeared in the series finale of "The Colbert Report."
