Metro-North Worker Union Ousted From NTSB Probe of Bronx Crash

Tuesday, 03 December 2013 11:35 PM EST

The Association of Commuter Rail Employees, which represents the operator of the Metro-North Railroad train that derailed and killed four people, was kicked out of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board investigation of the accident today.

The safety board said it removed the union as a party to the probe because its general chairman, Anthony Bottalico, held a press briefing today and gave interviews about the confidential investigation.

“While we value the technical expertise that groups like ACRE can provide during the course of an investigation, it is counterproductive when an organization breaches the party agreement and publicly interprets or comments on investigation information,” NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said in a statement. “Our rules exist to avoid the prospect of any party to an NTSB investigation offering its slant on the circumstances of the accident.”
