Hate crimes against Muslims in the United States surged 67 percent, a new FBI report reveals.
The law enforcement agency report, which details the number of crimes reported to police in 2015, shows religious hate crimes were up overall by 23 percent.
The FBI documented 257 anti-Muslim hate crimes last year — up from 154 in 2014. CBS News noted the total is second only to the "surge in hate crimes following the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001."
The biggest target of religious hate crimes, according to the FBI report, were Jews and Jewish institutions — representing 53 percent of all those reported.
CBS points out that while the figures detail crimes in 2015, they come at a time "of heightened tensions following last week's presidential election."
The network notes, however, the reported increase detailed in the FBI report could be due, in part, to better reporting and tracking by law enforcement agencies.
