Police say a jewelry store employee was shot to death in a brazen midday robbery on New York City's posh Upper East Side.
Police say two people were working at R.S. Durant on Madison Avenue at about 12:25 p.m. Wednesday when the gunman entered. He fired a semiautomatic pistol at a 71-year-old worker before fleeing the store with an undetermined amount of merchandise.
The worker was taken to Lenox Hill hospital with a chest wound and was later pronounced dead. The other worker was not injured.
The small jewelry shop is between 75th and 76th streets and near the Whitney Museum of American Art. The neighborhood boasts rows of swanky boutiques and expensive jewelry shops.
Police are still looking for the suspect. He is described as a man in his 30s wearing a blue overcoat and gray slacks.
