The New York Times has sent out an email to subscribers advising them not to fret over the risk of infection from handling the newspaper.

This week's email, headlined "Important news regarding your paper delivery," says the paper places a premium on the safety of subscribers and delivery contractors.

"We know you may have questions about receiving our newspaper," it says. "The World Health Organization has stated that it is safe to receive packages, even from areas where coronavirus has been reported, saying that the likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low, as is the risk of catching the virus from a package. This includes newspapers.

"Our production process is mostly automated, and it’s likely that the first person to touch your paper is the person who delivers it.

"We also want you to know that we and our national partners are guided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations at our printing plants and distribution centers."

As a closing thought, the papers reminds those who receive the print product that "as a home delivery subscriber, you also have full digital access every day: visit nytimes.com and log in with your email address and the password associated with your account."

The paper has said it has 4.7 million paid digital and print subscriptions. It has dropped its paywall for coverage of the pandemic.
