Attorney General William Barr in an interview with the Chicago Tribune last week said rumors President Donald Trump would refuse to leave office if he loses the 2020 presidential election are "c---."

"All this bullsh** about how the president is going to stay in office and seize power? I've never heard of any of that [expletive deleted]," Barr told the Tribune.

"I mean, I'm the attorney general. I would think I would have heard about it. They are projecting. They are creating an incendiary situation where there will be loss of confidence in the vote."

Trump in June said he would leave office willingly if November's election does not go his way.

"Certainly, if I don't win, I don't win," he told Fox News.

If he does not win the election, Trump continued, "you go on, do other things."

Still, he told Fox News, if he loses, "I think it would be a very bad thing for our country."

Trump in 2018 praised China's President Xi Jinping for consolidating power and extending his potential tenure, joking he would mind making such a move himself.

"He's now president for life. President for life. No, he's great," Trump said in leaked audio. "And look, he was able to do that. I think it's great. Maybe we'll have to give that a shot some day."
