Democratic State Lawmakers Fight Wisconsin's Same-Sex Marriage Ban

Two Democratic state lawmakers are spearheading a drive to get the Wisconsin Legislature to end the Badger State's ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The effort by Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa, who is openly bisexual, and Sen. Tim Carpenter, who is openly gay, is the first legislative effort to repeal the amendment passed in 2006.

But it has little chance of gaining steam with the legislature controlled by Republicans.

"Going back and rehashing things that have already been debated and pretty clearly decided is not the direction I want to go," Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, a Republican, told the Journal Sentinel.

"I want to focus on moving forward, not rehashing every single thing that's happened in the past."
