Rep. Tim Ryan: 'Ground Shifting' Under Trump, McConnell on Guns

Rallies will be planned this weekend to demand action on gun control, Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Tim Ryan said Tuesday, but he still finds it "appalling" that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to call in the Senate from recess to vote on House background check legislation.

"We have to apply the pressure," the Ohio Democrat told CNN's "New Day."

"What Mitch Mcconnell and President (Donald) Trump need to realize is the ground is shifting underneath them. There are Republicans, there are veterans, there are hunters who are all saying enough is enough."

The shootings in Dayton were not in Ryan's congressional district, but he still said it's an "awful thing" to be in the middle of the battle as it's "so frustrating."

He also said he is "so sick of the left-right baloney we deal with every single day" with the partisan fights over gun control.

'The bills in the Senate have the support of 90% of the American people; hunters, 70% to 80%," said Ryan. "Hunters in the United States say universal background check. I don't want somebody getting a weapon of mass destruction and walking into Dayton, Ohio, and annihilating people."

Ryan has not yet qualified for the upcoming September debates, but he does think people are seeing him as the candidate who can take Trump on.

But even if he doesn't make the debate stage, Ryan said he has momentum and plans to keep going with his campaign.

"People are saying, a guy from Ohio who's going after Trump, he's leading on guns, he's leading on the economy, let's take a look at this guy," he said
