Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Danny Ayalon told Newsmax on Tuesday that Qatar is playing all sides in the Israel-Hamas war and creates problems so that it can be the one to fix them.
"The Qataris have a position," Ayalon said during an appearance on Newsmax's "The Record with Greta Van Susteren." "They are a very small country but with a lot of influence. What they're doing is they're trying to play all sides, you know, with Iran, with the Ayatollahs, with ISIS, with the Taliban, with everyone. You know what they are? Remember the Charlie Chaplin movie about the glass fixer who would break the glass and then come and fix it? This is what they're doing: they create problems so they will be the solution."
Qatar has been increasingly criticized for harboring the leadership of Palestinian militant group Hamas, even as the small Middle Eastern country continues to play a key role in negotiations to free the hostages held in Gaza.
Ayalon said that the "easiest way" to minimize civilian casualties is for Hamas to decide to end the conflict, now poised to enter its third month.
"It's a terror organization, which is worse than ISIS in terms of the brutality, in terms of the no regard for human lives, least of all of their own people of Gaza," he said. "When I hear people say, 'Well, Israel could be a little bit more careful,' we have gone out of our way, risking the lives of our own soldiers, and the easiest way to minimize losses of those uninvolved is for Hamas to lay down their arms. Maybe even something which I totally am against, but I would even give them a free pass out of Gaza to Qatar or Turkey."
Host Van Susteren said she would not be in favor of allowing the terrorists to escape into a neighboring Arab country.
"The reason I'm saying that is because I would like to [say to] those who are not really very much informed that if they want to minimize the loss of lives, put the pressure on Hamas or the Hamas allies like Qatar," Ayalon said. "They're the ones who are responsible for everything."
Regardless of what Hamas decides, Ayalon said one thing is clear.
"We will take them out one way or another, because there is no other way," he said. "With them, it's do or die."
