Colombia to Send Planes to Honduras to Pick Up Migrants

By    |   Monday, 27 January 2025 04:04 PM EST

After it blocked two U.S. military planes carrying deportees from entering the country, Colombia is reportedly sending government planes to Honduras to pick up Colombians who entered the U.S. illegally, reported The Atlantic.

Colombia also agreed to reinforce the Darien Gap, a dangerous route between Colombia and Panama crossed by migrants to get to the U.S., with more manpower.

President Donald Trump slapped Colombia with 25% tariffs on all goods coming into the U.S. and a travel ban and immediate visa revocations on "Government officials, and all allies and supporters," among other measures, after Colombia rejected the planes, and Colombia hit back with ordering an increase of import tariffs on goods from the U.S. by 25%.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro walked back the threats and on Sunday evening, said Colombia had agreed to "all of President Trump's terms," including the "unrestricted acceptance" of immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally, CNN reported.

"We will continue to receive Colombians and Colombian women who return as deportees, guaranteeing them decent conditions as citizens subject to rights," Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo said in a televised statement.

The White House also backed off its threat to impose tariffs.

"Today's events make clear to the world that America is respected again. President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation's sovereignty, and he expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States," the White House said in a statement.
