Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is reportedly expected to return to the United Kingdom for the first time in more than a year following the death of his grandfather, Prince Philip, on Friday at the age of 99, the Independent reports.

"In loving memory of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, 1921-2021," reads a statement on the website for the couple’s nonprofit organization, Archewell. "Thank you for your service ... you will be greatly missed."

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," the Palace announced in a statement on Friday.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

A source close to the duke told the Daily Mail that he will "absolutely do his utmost to get back to the UK and be with his family."

The source added, "He will want nothing more than to be there for his family, and particularly his grandmother, during this awful time. Meghan is obviously pregnant so she will need to take advice from her doctors about whether it is safe for her to travel, but I think Harry will definitely go."

British author Tina Brown, who wrote “The Diana Chronicles” about the late Princess Diana, said that Philip played a key role in helping Harry following her death in 1997.

"A member of the Balmoral staff noted that Prince Philip, who had effectively lost his own mother at the age of ten when she was committed for three years to an asylum in Switzerland, was brilliantly effective with his grandsons, offering them gruff tenderness and outdoor activities like stalking and hiking to tire them out," Brown wrote in the book, according to People magazine.

Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, left the U.K. after stepping away from the royal family, and just a few weeks ago encountered controversy after criticizing the royal family during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. During the interview, the couple recalled that before the birth of their child, Archie, there were multiple "concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born," with members of the royal family.

They also said that a "lack of support and lack of understanding" caused them to step away from their official roles with the family, with the duke saying that his "biggest concern was history repeating itself," saying that he noticed similarities to his mother’s situation.

Harry also hit out at the relationship the royal family has with the U.K. tabloids, saying, "it's a case of if you as a family member are willing to wine, dine and give full access to these reporters, then you will get better press."
