Russian troops took control of the villages of Shevchenko and Novoiehorivka in eastern Ukraine, the Defense Ministry said Monday.

Shevchenko lies just south of the strategic city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. Novoiehorivka is in the Luhansk region.

Reuters could not independently confirm the battlefield reports.
