Russia President Vladimir Putin is once again No. 1 on Forbes' annual list of the World's Most Powerful People with President-elect Donald Trump coming in at No. 2.
It is the fourth consecutive year in the No. 1 spot for Putin, but a big jump for Trump.
"From the motherland to Syria to the U.S. presidential elections, Russia's leader continues to get what he wants," Forbes wrote. "In second place, President-elect Donald Trump has a seeming immunity to scandal, both houses of Congress on his side, and a personal net worth in the billions."
Putin's perch atop the list also corresponds with the past four years of President Obama and his policies. But Forbes suggests a stronger president might not change the outcome.
"Either way, with a likely ally entering the White House, Putin's power may go largely unchecked for years to come," Forbes wrote.
Trump makes the jump from No. 72 on the 2015 list of the world's most powerful.
Coming in at No. 3 is Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany. China's Xi Jinping is No. 4, and Pope Francis rounds out the Top 5.
Forbes' annual ranking identifies one person out of every 100 million whose actions mean the most. With the world's population at 7.4 billion, that equates to a top 74 this year.
