Israel's Peres Feeling 'well' after Being Rushed to Hospital

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's former President Shimon Peres was feeling well after being rushed to hospital the night before but is to remain under doctors' supervision and care throughout Monday, his office said.

The 92-year-old Peres was rushed to hospital on Sunday night with chest pains, days after he suffered a mild heart attack. After doctors detected an irregular heart rate, Peres was monitored in hospital overnight as a precaution.

Peres' personal physician Raphi Walden told Israeli Army Radio on Monday that Peres' heart rate had returned to normal. A statement later from Peres' office said he would remain in hospital "to allow him to continue to be monitored."

"President Peres now feels well and the tests conducted have not revealed any irregularities," the statement said.

Peres, a Noble Peace Prize laureate, completed his seven-year term as president in 2014. He remains active through his non-governmental Peres Center for Peace, which promotes coexistence between Arabs and Jews.

In his seven-decade political career, Peres also served three brief stints as prime minister.
