Saudi-led Coalition Says it Seized Iran Arms Bound for Yemen

Wednesday, 30 September 2015 06:17 AM EDT

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen's Shiite rebels says it has foiled an attempt by Iran to smuggle missiles and other weapons to the rebels aboard a fishing boat bound for Yemen.

The coalition says in a statement released Wednesday that the seizure took place on Saturday some 241 kilometers (150 miles) southeast of the Omani port of Salalah.

It says the coalition found 54 missiles, 18 armor-piercing shells, battery kits and other related equipment. Fourteen crew members aboard the ship have been arrested.

Iranian state media carried no report on the allegations, and Iranian authorities could not immediately be reached for comment. A spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which operates around the Arabian Peninsula, had no immediate comment.
